The Elect
by Dan Albergotti1)
(Zong-in Kim)
Like the vole, I have wandered a field
under the greater sky, not knowing nine-tenths
of my brethren are already gone.
I have found another of my kind
and joined her walk toward the sun
in its setting. I have entered the earth.
I have nosed the root that feeds the vine.
I have seen the remains of others, stopping
and walking on. One morning I woke,
and the other did not. I have felt the warmth
that dries the dew. I have been happy.
Above me, I have seen a wheeling halo of birds.
